Teaching
I have taught and developed quite a few courses over the years. As a TA at Tilburg University, I gave tutorials for various courses in Econometrics and Philosophy. After that, I became a lecturer in mathematics and statistics at the Haagse Hogeschool. Since I joined ESPhil in 2013, I have been involved in a great variety of courses.
Current Teaching
Philosophy for Economics (BA Economics)
I developed this course, which is basically an introduction to the philosophical foundations of normative economics, from scratch. I now co-teach (with Frederik Van De Putte) the course to two groups of +- 500 economics students each. The course reflects my research interests and in particular introduces the students to logic, fairness, and social choice theory.
Social ChoiceTheory and Political Representation (ReMA Philosophy & Economics)
William Riker (1982) discusses the upshot of the results of social choice theory results for our understanding of democracy. Riker’s account of the relation between social choice, voting and democracy has elicited various critical responses in the literature which will be traced in the course. Thus, the course is both an introduction to social choice theory and a discussion, guided by literature in normative democratic theory, of the relevance of its results for voting systems, democracy and political representation.
Logica en Formele Filosofie (BA Filosofie)
In this course (which I co-teach with Frederik Van De Putte), we introduce the students to symbolic logic. We discuss (formal language, proof systems and semantics of) propositional, predicate and modal logic and illustrate the relevance of logic for (formal) philosophy.
Theoretical Analytic Philosophy (BA Philosophy of a Specific Discipline)
This course (co-taught with 3 other lecturers) provides an introduction into the methods and foundations of theoretical analytic philosophy. More in particular, we start with a concise introduction to the methodology of analytic philosophy, after which we introduce the students to the three foundational disciplines of theoretical analytic philosophy: logic / epistemology/ metaphysics. I coordinate the course and teach the logic part.
