Bio

Hi there, and welcome to my academic homepage!

I am an associate professor in Theoretical Philosophy at the Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil) of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). I am a member of the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics (EIPE).

I believe that formal methods can help us to shed light on philosophical problems and this belief is reflected in my research. Currently, my main research goal is to develop a philosophically adequate theory of fairness which (i) starts out from the thought that fairness requires that claims should be satisfied in proportion to their strength and (ii) elaborates on and makes precise this thought, for a wide variety of situations, by exploiting models that have been proposed, in the economics literature, on fair division. Thus, my research on Fairness & Fair Division synthesizes literatures from philosophy and economics. I have also done research on Truth & Self-reference, on Non-classical logics, and I got involved in a debate about an argument for God’s existence.

I teach on topics closely related to my research.

Before I joined ESPhil in Rotterdam, I obtained my academic degrees from Tilburg University:

  • A PhD in Logic (2012, Cum Laude)

  • A MA in Philosophy (2003, Cum Laude)

  • A MSc in Econometrics (2002, Cum Laude)

After completing my PhD thesis, I was a lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics at the Haagse Hogeschool, after which I became a post-doc at the EUR in prof. F.A. Muller’s VICI project the Structure of Reality and the Reality of Structure. I also have non-academic work experience: as a portfolio manager (Robeco), as a risk manager (Robeco) and in operations research (TNO FEL).

On a personal note, I am married to this amazing woman, I (still) play soccer, just like my three sons, and I recently jumped the padel bandwagon with great enthusiasm. I like to hang out with friends, listen to reggae music and, in particular, to attend dub events: as a logician would put it, “life without a sound system is incomplete”.
